A roofer finishes a job at a real address using materials they had to buy, and the supplier issues an itemized invoice for that purchase.

No, and we want to be straight with you about that. Verification confirms that a third party checked real supplier invoices and found that roofing materials were purchased for that address by that contractor. It is proof the work and the materials were real. It is not a warranty, an inspection, or a rating of workmanship. Use it to narrow your list, then check licensing, insurance and references before you sign anything.
Search your address or neighborhood on the map and look at the verified projects nearby. If the roofer who quoted you has confirmed work in your area, you will see their projects and how many they have completed near you. A contractor with a track record of invoice-verified roofs close to home is a far stronger signal than a gallery of photos that could have come from anywhere.
It does not mean they are bad at their job. The map only shows contractors who participate in Invoice Defender, so plenty of good roofers are not listed yet. Treat a listing as a positive signal rather than treating its absence as a red flag — and ask an unlisted roofer for supplier references and recent local addresses you can look at.
They cannot add projects by hand. A project appears only when it matches supplier invoice records, which come from the supplier rather than the contractor. That is the whole point of the model: the evidence comes from a third party with no reason to make anyone look good. Some placements on this site are sponsored, and those are always labeled — but sponsorship buys visibility, never a verified project. No amount of money adds a roof to the map or changes what the invoices say.
Yes, and it is one of the most useful things here. Filter the map by manufacturer, product line and color, and you will see real homes in your area with that exact shingle on them. It beats a two-inch sample board or a rendering, because you are looking at the real color in your own light and next to houses like yours.
